HON. SALEH BARDE KEANA APPLAUD THE ACTING RECTOR OF ISA MUSTAPHA AGWAI 1 POLYTHENIC LAFIA
The Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission, Mr. Saleh Barde Keana, urged both public and private institutions to comply with the Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act.
During a visit to the Isa Mustapha Agwai I Polytechnic in Lafia, Nasarawa State. Mr. Saleh Barde Keana emphasized the importance of disability inclusion for national development. He pointed out that many public buildings are inaccessible to persons with disabilities, which violates the law requiring institutions to provide accessible facilities.
Barde appreciated the Rector for implementing measures such as a five percent quota for employment, admissions, and free education for PWDs at the Polytechnic. He commended the Rector's dedication and commitment to the inclusion of PWDs in all aspects of the institution.
Dr. Nurudeen Mu’azu Maifata, commended the Commission for their appointments and stressed the importance of PWDs in societal progress. He highlighted the Polytechnic's commitment to ensuring all new structures are disability-friendly and pledged to continue supporting and involving PWDs in the institution's activities.
According to him, the law states that "erson with disability shall not be discriminated against on the ground of his disability by any person or institution in any manner or circumstance" says Hon. Saleh Barde Keana.
“The law also mandates that a person with disability has the right to access the physical environment and buildings on an equal basis with others.
“A public building shall be constructed with the necessary accessibility aids such as lifts (where necessary), ramps and any other facility that shall make them accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities,” .
He appreciated the Rector for giving PWDs special attention in the institution by implementing the five percent quota in employment, admission and free education.
He expressed satisfaction with the Rector’s willingness to serve the institution in the best of his ability, adding that “We are proud of you”.
The Acting Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Nurudeen Mu’azu Maifata, congratulated the Executive Chairman and his members on their “well-deserved appointments”, believing that the PWDs are essential components of every society’s growth.
Dr. Maifata said since the legislation on Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act came on board all newly built structures of the Polytechnic are disability-friendly.
Dr. Maifata assured ongoing collaboration and open communication with PWDs for the benefit of the institution.
He promised to continue to carry PWDs along in all activities of the institution, adding nothing stops the institution from admitting or employing a person with special needs except if not qualified.
